Senate Bill 354 is currently being reviewed in Georgia, aiming to remove licensing requirements for specific roles in the beauty care industry like Barber Apprentice, Barber II, and Cosmetologists. Our position is clear: we oppose this bill because it puts the safety and quality of services provided by licensed professionals at risk.
Without proper licensing, there is a risk of unqualified individuals falsely claiming to be professional barbers or cosmetologists. This could compromise the established professional standards in these fields, potentially endangering consumers. Georgia has over 50,000 licensed barbers and cosmetologists, as reported by the Georgia Secretary of State, all of whom have undergone rigorous training to meet industry standards. Deregulating licensing could weaken these standards, jeopardizing public health by promoting unhygienic practices and potential health risks. We call on Georgia legislators to reject SB 354 to maintain professional service standards and consumer safety by upholding licensing requirements for barbers and cosmetologists.
